Internet Safety is an umbrella term for a collection of security practices used to be on the safer side of the web.

These practices include things like using a different password for each website, not visiting adult websites, and phishing attacks.

Internet safety is something that's becoming more and more important.

The internet is something people use in their everyday life, and along with it comes the chance of it being used as a means to steal your data.

This could be anything from personal information like passwords, passwords for online accounts, credit card details, and even bank account details.

The internet is a wonderful place. It's a medium that gives us instant gratification and allows us to communicate with others across the world.

But there's also a dark side to it — cybercrime.

Without fear of being scammed, posted, or hacked, you do not need to be afraid anymore!

Here are some protections you can use to stay safe while using the internet.

  • Use strong passwords for your email and social media accounts - As we all know that today everything from your bank accounts to your personal life. Everything is connected to the internet and your life will be badly affected if you don't take safety measures to protect your identity online. First, don't use the same passwords for more than one of your online account The reason is quite easy to guess: if one of your online accounts is hacked, then the others will soon follow. By using different passwords, you reduce the potential loss you could suffer in case this privacy breach takes place. One of the best ways to ensure your online accounts are not accessed by anyone else but you is to use the 2 step verification method. Activating this method means that you will have to enter, besides your credentials, a code sent to your phone. Using this method, you can protect your private information from social media accounts or important data from your email account. Second, passwords should be long (at least 8 characters) with a combination of upper case and lower case letters and at least 2 numbers, have at least one special character, and should not be basic words found in the dictionary

Signs which trigger spyware 1. the computer is slow when opening programs or running some applications 2. pop-up windows appear all the time 3. a new toolbar may appear in your web browser 4. the Home page of your web browser has been modified 5. the search engine in your web browser has been changed 6. error messages start to appear unexpectedly Stay safe from spyware - 1. Don’t click any suspicious links or pop-up windows 2. Don’t answer to unexpected answers or simply choose No 3. Be careful when downloading free applications 4. Review permissions and think that an app really needs that kind of permission to function 5. Install or download apps or software from a trusted source only 6. Refrain from visiting unknown sites and clicking suspicious links. 7. Don’t believe SMS, phone calls, and e-mails that ask for any of your confidential info, even your Date of Birth. 8. • Keep your PC, laptop, and mobile phones updated - Keeping your mobile phones, pc, and laptop updated is important for your security and privacy. Most of us cannot be 100% sure that every single piece of software is being updated as often as it should. Also, we don't want our private information to fall into the hands of hackers or snoopers so it's important that you regularly update your devices with the latest protection tools available on the market. So, if you know you use popular software, like Java, Adobe Flash, Adobe Shockwave, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Quicktime, or popular web browsers like Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Internet Explorer, always make sure you have the latest available patches. You need to understand that these software solutions are always under threat from criminal minds, so don’t rely on your memory and install a dedicated solution to perform these actions for you.

  • Go online with a secure Browser - When you're online, it's important to use a secure browser. There are a few different types of secure browsers, and each has its own benefits. The most common type of secure browser is the web browser. Web browsers are used to browse the internet. They allow you to visit websites, read emails, and use other online features. There are different types of web browsers. The most common is Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Other popular browsers include Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Apple Safari. Some Precautions you can take - 1. Choose the latest version for your browser and make sure you have the latest security patches installed. This is important and keeps your system secure from online criminal attacks. 2. Increase your privacy and security settings in your browser. 3. Choose a private browsing session when you access a website you are not sure about. Choosing this navigation mode will prevent your browsing session details from being stored. 4. Use secure websites for sensitive financial operations. To visit a secure website, make sure the web address starts with “https://”. The “s” comes from the “secure socket layer“, and it indicates you are connected to a website where data, which is sent and received, is encrypted.

  • Don’t trust public and free Wi-fi networks - Public Wi-Fi networks are often insecure because they're unprotected and open to anyone on the network. This means that any malware or viruses that infected your computer on the public network could also infect your computer on other networks you access, including your home or work network. Free Wi-Fi networks also pose a security risk. These networks are typically unsecured and can be accessed by anyone on the network. This means that anyone on the network has access to your personal information, including your login credentials and passwords. One of the favorite methods used by online criminals to retrieve your credentials is by using wireless sniffers to access data sent over unprotected networks.

  • Check the link before you click it - Links can be deceiving. Before you click on a link, make sure it's safe. Check the link to make sure it's the right one. For that, you can use a tool named Virustotal

  • Don’t post private information on your social media accounts - Exposing personal details may lead hackers into finding your financial information. For the same reason, check your kids’ social media behavior to make sure they won’t expose private information that may possibly be used against you, in phishing attacks.
